Questions about health insurance agents
Are health insurance agents free to use in my state?
Yes. Marketplace-certified agents are paid by the insurance carriers, and your premium is the same whether you enroll through an agent, through the marketplace website, or by phone. There is no fee to you.
Where do I buy an individual health plan in my state?
Most states use HealthCare.gov, and about twenty run their own marketplace website. A licensed agent can enroll you in the same plans at the same price and help you estimate premium tax credits.
Can I get help if I missed open enrollment?
Possibly. Losing other coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, and certain income changes open a Special Enrollment Period, usually for 60 days. Medicaid and CHIP enrollment is open all year. An agent can tell you quickly whether you qualify.
What does a health insurance agent actually do?
They estimate your subsidy, compare plans by the doctors and prescriptions you use, explain deductibles and out-of-pocket limits in plain English, submit your enrollment, and stay your point of contact when something goes wrong with a claim or a bill.
Do agents also handle small business coverage?
Many do. If you are self-employed or run a small business, an agent can compare an individual marketplace plan against a small-group plan and explain the tax treatment of each.
