What to know about Medicare in California
California runs its own marketplace, Covered California, which may offer state-funded financial help in addition to federal premium tax credits. Medi-Cal, the state Medicaid program, has been expanded to cover many low-income adults, and California requires residents to have health coverage or pay a state tax penalty. California also has a Medigap birthday rule that lets Medigap enrollees switch to a plan with equal or lesser benefits during an annual window around their birthday without medical underwriting.
Medicare is federal, so enrollment windows are the same in every state: the Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, and Medicare Advantage members can make one change between January 1 and March 31. What differs in California is the plan lineup by county, Medigap rules, and which carriers an agent is appointed with. A local agent knows all three.

Does it cost anything to work with a Medicare agent in California?
No. Licensed Medicare agents are paid by the insurance carriers when you enroll in a plan, and the premium is the same whether you use an agent or enroll on your own. You never pay the agent a fee.
What is the difference between a Medicare agent and a Medicare broker?
A captive agent represents one carrier. An independent agent or broker is appointed with several carriers and can compare plans across them. Most agents on MeetBrokers are independent. Ask any agent which carriers they represent.
When can I change my Medicare plan in California?
The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 every year. Medicare Advantage members also get January 1 through March 31 to make one change. Your first chance is the 7-month Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday, and certain life events open a Special Enrollment Period.
How do I check that an agent is licensed?
